Ashtanga Fundamentals Course

Saturday 16-05/06-06/20-06
15:00 – 17:00

At Ashtanga Yoga Leiden, we LOVE the basics. Because they provide a solid foundation to build upon. And because they never get boring. Even after years of practice, you can keep refining and exploring your downward facing dog – and that’s exactly what keeps it fun!

What you’ll learn

In our three weeks’ fundamentals course, we’ll dive into the method of ashtanga and go extensively through the sun salutations and fundamental poses. You will learn:

  • what ashtanga is and what it means
  • how the ashtanga system is built
  • the ashtanga method of posture, drishti and breath (tristana)
  • the opening and closing mantra and its meaning
  • the sun salutations and fundamental poses, including the Sanskrit names, vinyasa count, alignment principles and modifications
  • how to apply the breathing technique (Ujjayi)
  • how to move with awareness
  • some basic functional anatomy
  • the Mysore style practice (self-practice), with the opportunity to practice in our shala for a month!

What others say

I really enjoyed the course and truly hope there will be a continuation. I found the material excellent, especially because it is so visual rather than text-heavy. Having a clear sequence of the postures to follow was particularly helpful, especially for someone with no prior experience in Ashtanga. I also really appreciated that you included the chant and closing part of the practice in the course material. For me personally, the course provided a much-needed sense of structure in the learning process. Another very positive aspect was how evident it is that you both have deep knowledge and experience, while also being extremely friendly and patient teachers.” – M.A.
